U.S. ARMY HISTORICAL FOUNDATION REGISTRY
The U.S. Army Historical Foundation is reaching out to veterans organizations in a concerted effort to work together to honor Army Veterans across the nation.  The program is sponsored by the National Museum of the United States Army.  Every registry entry includes a Soldier's name, hometown, rank and service history. There is no charge to be enrolled; however, there is a $10.00 fee to have a photograph added to the registry.  To date the names and service histories of over 44.000 Soldiers and Army Vets have been entered in the registry.  Once built, the National Army Museum will present a comprehensive history of the Army from Colonial times to the present and educate the public on the Army's role in developing our nation and preserving freedom at home and around the world.  The registry can be viewed online at the Army Historical Foundation web site at:  http://www.usarmyregistry.org   Army veterans may establish an account and submit their own historical registry at this site.

REQUESTING MILITARY RECORDS, MEDALS AND AWARDS

Requests for the issuance or replacement of military service medals, decorations, and awards should be directed to the specific branch of the military in which the veteran served. However, for Air Force (including Army Air Corps) and Army personnel, the National Personnel Records Center will verify the awards to which a veteran is entitled and forward the request with the verification to the appropriate service department for issuance of the medals.

If you are requesting an update or replacement of your DD-214 you must also complete Form SF 180.  Due to a fire at the National Personnel Records Center in July 1973, millions of records were destroyed or damaged.  Records suffering the most damage are:

Army veterans discharged or deceased between 1 Nov 1912 and 31 Dec 1959.  Air Force veterans discharged, deceased, or retired before 1 Jan 1964, whose names come alphabetically after Hubbard ((James E.).

If you are in this category you will be asked to fill out a questionnaire about your military service.  Without answering this questionnaire (NA Form 13075) and providing some form of supporting documents showing proof of service, schooling, foreign service dates and awards you will only be able to obtain a Certificate of Service.

When requesting Foreign Awards from the NPRC in St. Louis you will only have your records updated.  It is Defense Department policy that foreign awards must be purchased by the recipient.  The DoD does not provide foreign medals, ribbons, badges or other forms of foreign awards.

The Standard Form (SF 180), Request Pertaining to Military Records, is recommended for requesting medals and awards. It is very import that you provide as much information as possible.  Many service records were lost in a fire at the NPRC on July 12, 1973 making some verification not possible.  You should include a copy of the DD-214 and any other supporting documentation available.  To correct records send Form DD-149 to Total Army Personnel Command (see below Second Choice)

5 U.S. Divisions have secured the Korean DMZ from 28 July 1954.  Their personnel are eligible:
1st Marine Div (1953-1955)
7th Inf Div (1953-1971)
24th Inf Div (1953-1957)
1st Cav Div (1957-1965)
2nd Inf Div (1965-present).

This medal was awarded by the Republic of Korea to U.S. Military personnel in 1972.  It was awarded for service from 28 July 1954 to a date yet to be determined.  In 1974 the U.S. JCS refused to accept the medal based on the rule that the U.S. must also award a medal for the same service and the awarding country must also award it to their own military forces. The first reason is incorrect because the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal had been awarded and the Korea Defense Service Medal is currently authorized.  Because this medal was specifically created to honor the long and devoted service of U.S. Military personnel in defense of the R.O.K. the second rule can and should be waived as it was for continuous wear of the ROKPUC by members of the 7th ID from 1950 thru 1971 when the Division left Korea.  There have been many less honorable waivers granted for wear of U.S. and foreign medals.  There is NO valid reason for not accepting this award for wear!

The 7th ID, 1st CD, 2nd ID and Combat Infantrymen's Associations on behalf of their medal eligible members have provided a letter of support for reestablishing this medal.  The 1st Marine Division Association  has not commented and the 24th Infantry Division Association refuses support.

IF YOU RIDE A MOTORCYCLE, BE A ROK AND ROLLER
.

The purpose of the KDVA Motorcycle Club is to create a visible group of Korea Veterans and Supporters to get their name out among riding Veterans and the general public.  This is another way to bring more national attention and recognition to Korea service, its issues, and those affecting Veterans of all eras.  This is the serious side but they are not talking about all work and no play.  They take Harley serious when they say, “Live to Ride!”  They also want to bring their Member Bikers across this great nation together for fun and for comradeship.  It is hoped you feel the spirit for what they are trying to do.  If you served in Korea, YOU are already a ROKer, now ROLL with the Brotherhood.  THEY NEED YOU!!!   There are no sign up fees and no annual dues.  There are no uniforms to wear, and you don’t have to attend meetings as an At-large member.  They don’t tell you what to ride, when to ride, or where to ride.  They do expect you to love This nation, support our veterans, support issues affecting our service, support our Armed Forces around the globe, wear their Colors, ride with veterans when you can, ROLL for veteran causes.  The ROK AND ROLLERS support Rolling Thunder and all Veteran MC's supporting veteran issues.
